Jean was born in Lancashire and for the past 17 years has lived in the Yorkshire Dales.

Her poems have appeared in Acumen, Artemis, Cake, The Frogmore Papers, The High Window Journal, London Magazine, Stand, The North, Mslexia, Other Poetry, Smoke, Dream Catcher, Meridian, Oasis, Orbis, Poetry and Audience, the Bridport Prize Anthology (2016), and have been broadcast on BBC Radio Three and Radio Four. She is a past winner of the Yorkshire Post Prize and the Leeds Libraries Writing Prize, and has been shortlisted for The Rialto Prize and The Poetry Business Pamphlet Competition (2017).

Her plays have been performed at Derby Playhouse, Edinburgh Festival, Harrogate Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse, etc., and her stand-up comedy script won the Polo prize at London’s Comedy Store.
As a professional actor she has credits for stage, film and television.
